As you may or may not know, November is National Family Caregivers Month. About 34.2 million Americans provide unpaid care to an older adult. Today, we want to recognize YOU, one of our everyday heroes. Being a caregiver is a labor of love, but we realize it can be stressful sometimes. As caregivers we can get lost in the needs and wants of our loved ones, and we can forget the importance of caring for ourselves as well. This month, your month, I challenge you to do something for yourself that makes you feel relaxed and happy. Here are a couple of simple ideas:
You don’t have to break the bank for this! There are lots of affordable options for diffusers and essential oils. Scents like lavender might even be effective as a sleep aid.
Take a hot bath
Turn on some candles, buy some bath salts, and relax! A long hot bath can help reduce inflammation and control blood sugar levels.
Read a book
Exercise relieves stress and gives you energy. Even a brisk walk or a quick dance could help!
Watch a funny movie
Laughter helps you relax and releases endorphins (also known as “feel good” hormones). It speeds up your pulse, improves blood flow, activates your muscles, and helps you get more oxygen.
Don’t be afraid to ask for and accept help, be it from friends, family, or even a partner like Homethrive.
Finally, I also wanted to share a great list from AARP that highlights Resources Caregivers Should Know.
